Saltus Raises $4,000 For Tsunami Appeal

There is much to be learned in the act of giving back – this is the philosophy behind the Saltus Service Learning programme.

Each year, students at the middle and senior school level are given the chance to lead their own community service initiatives with the support of the school faculty and staff. For 2018-19 Saltus students have chosen the theme of ‘unity’.

“Students felt that the theme of unity is an important one because it ties in with our emphasis on inclusivity and diversity” said Deputy Head Ms. Nicole Chichon. “It is a theme that resonates not just within our school community but throughout the island and on a global stage.”

Senior student leaders were given the task to choose charities for the school to support that match with this year’s theme. One of the chosen charities for 2018-19 is the Red Cross and specifically, its appeal for the tsunami victims in Indonesia.

This initiative was chosen because it demonstrates how the mission of the Red Cross is in line with the theme of unity; not just on a local, community level but from a global and international aid standpoint.

Students from the school’s St. John’s Road campus were touched by the news and the videos shared in classes and assemblies showing the damage and family hardships, and felt compelled to help. Students chose to participate to raise money through a grub day. Service to others and an outward look towards the world are part of the Saltus mission and vision. To donate, click here.
